Paul Philipp was confirmed on Saturday for another four-year term as president of the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) during the organisation’s congress in Wincrange.

Philipp, who has held the position since 2004 and has now stood in seven elections, once again faced no opposing candidate, just as in four previous elections.

Although former Ettelbruck Etzella president Tun Di Bari had considered running, he ultimately chose not to stand.

Asked whether he would have welcomed a challenger, Philipp replied that the focus should be on Luxembourg football rather than personal ambitions, emphasising the need for teamwork and understanding the workings of the federation.

Philipp stressed that it takes time to really know the organisation, to work together with clubs and various groups, adding that the work does not begin just because someone new receives a title.

Philipp has not yet decided whether this will be his final term as FLF president or if he might run again in 2030, stating that his current priority is the work ahead in the coming months.

One of the main challenges remains the relatively low level of the national league, as illustrated by the results of Luxembourgish clubs in European competitions.

To address this and improve the standard of football played in the country, Philipp is convinced that more needs to be done to strengthen youth development.

He pondered whether Luxembourg needs to find even more ways to improve training, especially youth training.

Philipp embraces the diversity of the sport in Luxembourg, stressing that it is a multicultural country, which is why teams do not have to rely only on Luxembourgish players.

Philipp explained that while these are medium-term plans, football requires immediate results as well. Consequently, the way forward is to invest even more in training.

As for the national team, Philipp acknowledged that recent results have not always been positive, noting that several key players were injured at the same time.

While the team is now better overall compared to previous years, losing four important players simultaneously is still difficult to overcome.

He added that head coach Jeff Strasser remains the right person to lead the national team.
