It is no longer a secret that more and more Luxembourgers are leaving the country to limit their housing expenses. This is the case for Charles (his name has been cahnged) who moved to a German commune not far from Schengen.
Despite his substantial budget, Charles explained he had only found old flats and small houses in the Grand Duchy, leading him to turn to the neighbouring country. There, he could afford modern and spacious accommodation without breaking the bank.
To Charles, quality of life was is more important than proximity to work. Whilst he has been working in the Grand Duchy for several years, he does not mind the distance, stating there are enough routes to get around traffic.
Nor is he the only Luxembourger who has made this choice: of 17 tenants in Charles’ residence, 15 are of Luxembourgish origin. Almost all of them have moved for the same reason, namely the huge rise in rents. Charles laments that these days 700 euros a month will not even find you a room in Luxembourg anymore.
For many Luxembourgers, quality of life has become a priority. Everything is within 30 minutes of his residence, which is really convenient, he adds.
Nonetheless, the Luxembourgish labour market remains attractive, given the German minimum wage is much lower. He therefore would like to move back to Luxembourg when the prices become more tolerable. A distant dream for the time being.
“We’ll come back when prices fall,” he concludes.
