In October 2024, the climate bonus for mobility – which offers financial incentives for the purchase of bicycles, electric vehicles, and similar – was extended.

However, since then, the payment of these specific bonuses has been temporarily halted due to the absence of an updated legal framework.

In principle, anyone who purchases a vehicle eligible under the climate bonus scheme by 30 September 2024 and registers it by September 2025 is entitled to claim a bonus. The scheme provides up to €600 for a bicycle or electric bike, and up to €6,000 for a fully electric car, a seven-seater family vehicle, or an emission-free van. These amounts had previously been paid out without issue – but since the scheme’s extension, this has no longer been the case.

The current suspension affects only a portion of the climate bonus for mobility. Specifically, it applies to all bicycles, e-bikes, electric cars, electric vans, and hydrogen vehicles purchased up to June 2024. Bonuses for these vehicles are currently on hold because the corresponding regulation has not yet been adapted to reflect the scheme’s extension. Until that legal adjustment is made, applicants will have to wait for their payments.

It remains unclear exactly when the legal framework will be updated. However, the Environment Agency is already processing all submitted and incoming applications so that payments can be made as quickly as possible once the regulation has been revised.

The climate bonus for housing is not affected by this issue. Payments under that scheme continue to be made as normal, both before and after the extension.
