Due to persistently high temperatures, the Ministry of Health has activated the second-highest alert level. Although the ministry has described the decision as "preventative" in its official statement, the move comes with a series of clear measures and warnings.

'Level 3 heatwave alert': What does that mean?

Luxembourg's national authorities have triggered a "Level 3 heatwave alert" in response to the high temperatures forecast for the coming days. According to the official statement released by the Ministry of Health, the measure is designed to improve coordination of protective actions for individuals considered particularly vulnerable to extreme heat. The duration of the alert will be flexibly adjusted based on weather developments and remains under constant supervision by the competent authorities.

Current weather forecasts indicate that temperatures are expected to remain above 20°C during the night from Friday to Saturday. From Monday onward, the perceived temperature could locally reach 39°C, as high humidity is set to intensify the heat experience.

Targeted support for the elderly

Under this alert, special care services will be made available to residents aged 75 and above. Specifically, the support targets individuals who live alone, have limited autonomy, and do not already receive assistance through nursing insurance. The measure provides for regular visits to senior citizens to monitor their health and help them maintain adequate hydration. These visits are set to begin on Friday, 19 June.

Eligible individuals who are not yet enrolled can register with the Luxembourg Red Cross by calling 2755. A family member may also call on their behalf to complete the registration. The hotline is open daily, except on public holidays, from 8am to 3pm. Outside these hours, healthcare staff or the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) may contact the on-call service of the Sanitary Inspectorate to facilitate registration. The Umbrella Organisation of Luxembourg Care Providers (COPAS) is responsible for coordinating with at-home support and care services.

Important contacts

Individuals registered with the Luxembourg Red Cross are asked to open the door for care staff during home visits. If they are not at home, they should notify their assigned care service in advance. For further questions or practical information, individuals may contact the Sanitary Inspectorate of the National Health Directorate at 24 78 56 53.

In the event of symptoms such as unusual tiredness, dizziness, headaches, disorientation, fever, or a general feeling of malaise, residents are advised to consult a doctor or other healthcare professional without delay. In case of an emergency, they should call 112 immediately.

Precautionary measures for all residents

The National Health Directorate is urging the public to follow the recommendations below during periods of extreme heat:

  • Drink water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity, such as sports, during the hottest hours of the day.
  • Spend as much time as possible in the shade or in cool indoor spaces.
  • When going outside, wear light clothing, cover your head, seek shade, and always carry water with you.
  • At home, keep windows, shutters, blinds, and curtains closed during the day to help maintain lower indoor temperatures.
  • Ventilate your home only during the coolest hours of the day.
  • Regularly check in on elderly or otherwise vulnerable individuals, as well as those living alone.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.

Heatwave and National Day

The current heat alert coincides with the period around National Day and the planned festivities over the coming days. The National Health Directorate is calling on the public to exercise particular caution during outdoor events in order to ensure the safety of all participants.
