The idea was to gain flexibility in light of increased home schooling and reduce stress with fewer exams. An internal document from the Ministry of Education notes that the benefits of the system are worth making the switch permanent.

However, teachers’ union FEDUSE is critical of semesters given that fewer exams not necessarily mean less stress for students. If a person is below average in the first semester, they will only have one more chance to improve their grades. Another problem is that the semester system fails to align with school holidays.

Preparations for the permanent switch are already underway nevertheless. Some schools have begun implementing a pilot project with a revised grade system, which should allow pupils to maintain a better overview of their position.

When asked about the matter, Minister of Education Claude Meisch stated that nothing has been decided so far and that teachers, pupils, and parents will all be consulted before making such a permanent change.
