2/3 of all emissions in Luxembourg can be traced back to the transport sector. In order to reduce the Grand Duchy's emissions, the government thus deems the transition to electric vehicles a key element in its strategy. State grants for the purchase of electric cars and bicycles have recently been extended to that end as well.

Minister for Energy Claude Turmes stressed that the power used to charge the cars will come from 100% renewable energy sources. However, Turmes also acknowledged that even if Luxembourg had managed to reach its climate targets for 2020, this was in large part also due to the special circumstances created by the pandemic.

The suspended air traffic and an increased use of teleworking were some of the major factors which contributed to reduced emissions. Minister for the Environment Carole Dieschbourg stressed that the government intends to make use of these favourable circumstances.

Minister for Mobility François Bausch stated that it is important to consciously use alternative modes of transport to the car in order to establish a sustainable mobility network. Electric cars alone could not solve the country's issues such as congested roads and traffic jams, the Minister stressed.
