The government has officially accepted Dean Spielmann’s nomination for the position of Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
The judges and advocates-general of the Court of Justice of the European Union are due to be partially replaced every three years. This process started in June with a call for candidates and the establishment of a national selection committee tasked with conducting candidate interviews. Subsequently, the committee proposed Dean Spielmann as the preferred candidate for the position.
Luxembourg currently has three judges within the EU courts, specifically the Court of Justice and the General Court of the European Union, including Marc Jaeger, François Biltgen, and now Dean Spielmann.
Spielmann, a 61-year-old legal professional, has been in service at the General Court of the EU since 2016, having previously spent over a decade at the European Court of Human Rights, where he held the position of President until 2015.
In addition, Luxembourg’s Judge Georges Ravarani at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg will see his mandate expire on 1 May of the upcoming year. To fill this position, a national selection committee, under the leadership of Roger Linden, President of the Superior Court of Justice, has identified three potential candidates: Marie-Jeanne Kappweiler, Jörg Gerkrath, and Stéphane Pisani. The approval of one of these candidates will now rest with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
The Government Council also successfully approved the draft law concerning the provisional budget, spanning from 1 January to 30 April 2024. This provisional budget serves as an interim financial framework, ensuring the continued operation of the state’s various departments and agencies until the formation of a new government, which will subsequently devise its own budget.
