Police reformMinister for Home Affairs seeks legal framework for local police and CCTV rules

Luxembourg's local police initiative will launch in Differdange and Grevenmacher on 1 May, Minister Léon Gloden confirmed Thursday, while proposing new legislation to standardise the programme and simplify CCTV rules.

Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden has announced plans to establish a legal foundation for local police forces while simplifying administrative procedures for local video surveillance systems. The initiative comes as Luxembourg expands its pilot programme for community-oriented policing.

Since summer 2023, local police units have operated in test phases within Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette. During a parliamentary committee meeting on Thursday, Minister Gloden claimed that the presence of these officers contributes to an increased “feeling of security” in the sectors concerned. The minister noted their strategic deployment during peak periods – such as summer gatherings – rather than continuous patrols across entire municipalities.

The programme will extend to Differdange and Grevenmacher starting 1 May, with a regional approach planned for the Moselle Valley. Gloden recently clarified on RTL Radio that future deployments will not be limited to individual towns, marking a shift toward broader regional coverage.
