MP Fernand Kartheiser (ADR) recently put forward an urgent parliamentary enquiry, addressing the remarks Minister Asselborn issued after the events at the US Capitol in Washington on 6 January 2021.

Asselborn's statement, in which he declared then-President Trump to be a criminal, was also quoted in a New York Times article. The MP therefore asked a number of questions regarding the administration's position on the events, and whether or not Asselborn was really representing the country's best interests.

The official response to the enquiry notes that no diplomatic action was initiated by either side after then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cancelled his trip to Luxembourg and the rest of his EU stops. Officials also emphasise that there is consensus among Union members that President Trump provoked the violence at the capital with his rhetoric.
