The number of complaints filed with Luxembourg’s Medical Chamber has risen sharply in recent years, according to data released by Minister of Health Martine Deprez.
The figures, provided in response to a parliamentary question from Pirate Party MP Marc Goergen, show complaints more than tripled from 70 in 2019 to 214 in 2024. Most cases involve grievances against doctors, filed either by patients or public institutions.
The Medical Chamber lacks authority to impose sanctions – a responsibility that falls to the Disciplinary Board. Under the principle of expediency, the Chamber independently decides whether to pursue complaints.
Minister Deprez noted that processing times vary significantly due to multiple factors. Complaints may be delayed by incomplete submissions, the fact that the doctor in question no longer practices in Luxembourg, pending court rulings, or multiple filings against the same practitioner.
In one case, resolution took five years as the Chamber awaited responses from the public prosecutor’s office and the National Health Directorate.
