The driver of the van, which bore French registration plates, fled the scene on foot shortly after the accident took place at 6.40am. The authorities mounted a search with police dogs, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward, who may have seen anything in the surrounding area (Wolwener Klaus, Rombach, Martelange and Perlé) or anyone who may have given the driver a lift. Any information should be registered with Diekirch/Vianden police on 244-801000 or 113.
The Grand Ducal police have also warned motorists in the area against picking up any hitchhikers and to inform the authorities immediately if such a person is spotted.
