An eight- to nine-month-old infant was injured in a violent street assault late Thursday evening, 5 February, on Avenue Émile Reuter in Luxembourg City.
According to investigators, at around 10.30pm an unidentified man with no apparent connection to the family suddenly struck the infant with a forceful punch to the back of the head while the child was being held by his mother. The suspect then fled the scene.
The child’s father immediately chased after him. During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly made a threatening gesture suggesting an attempt to stab the father before taking refuge in a building on Route d’Arlon.
Police quickly intervened and arrested the suspect inside the building. He was later formally identified by the infant’s parents.
The infant was taken to hospital for medical observation.
On the orders of the public prosecutor’s office, the suspect was brought before an investigating judge, where he was charged with attempted murder of a child under the age of 14, or alternatively assault and battery on a minor under 14, as well as making threats by gestures under the Criminal Code.
The investigating judge ordered the suspect’s placement in pre-trial detention. The investigation remains ongoing.
