
During a routine inspection in Longwy, in the French department of Meurthe-et-Moselle, customs authorities made a substantial seizure of 1,373 jars of rolling tobacco from Luxembourg. The authorities became suspicious upon discovering a carton of cigarettes and €235 in cash inside the van. In total, 170 kg of tobacco were seized.
The verdict was swiftly delivered on Thursday, 11 May 2023. The court in Briey sentenced the young man, a Tunisian from the Paris region, to four months in prison accompanied by a detention order and a €1,000 fine, according to the Républicain Lorrain.
In addition, it was revealed that the motorist, who was operating a “borrowed” van for his “mission,” lacked a valid driving licence, identity documents, and work papers. He had also given the police a false identity. According to the summary given by the president of the court, the accused had visited a shop near the Luxembourg border to collect a pre-arranged and prepaid tobacco order.
