Residents of Rue de l’Alzette in Helmdange have raised concerns over a malfunctioning level crossing barrier that frequently leaves them stranded, unable to enter or exit their street. The issue has sparked frustration, particularly over what might happen in an emergency.

The barrier, which controls access to the dead-end street, has reportedly been malfunctioning repeatedly. When it fails, it remains in the closed position, blocking the only vehicular access to the street. Residents have taken to social media to voice their concerns, questioning how they would respond to emergencies. The sole alternative exit – a nearby bicycle lane – was rendered unusable after the local authority installed posts to block access.

In response to enquiries by our colleagues from RTL.lu, the Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) acknowledged the recent disruptions but clarified that the barrier was functioning as designed during these incidents. “In the event of a malfunction, the barrier is supposed to remain closed to guarantee the safety of train passengers and motorists”, a CFL spokesperson explained.

CFL confirmed that the barrier experienced seven malfunctions between 10 and 17 March due to a loose contact in an electronic component. However, the issue has since been identified and resolved. The company also noted that, aside from these recent incidents, the barrier had only one other malfunction in all of 2024.

CFL emphasised that emergency services and police have the ability to manually open the barrier if needed, ensuring access in critical situations.
