Anyone familiar with construction sites in Luxembourg in recent years knows that they have often caused serious disruption, with the building of a tram line in the capital proving especially problematic. The good news is that 2023 will mark the end of work on several major sites across the country, as Minister for Mobility François Bausch outlined in an interview with our colleagues at RTL 5Minutes.
Among the major projects that are due to be completed is the Rodange railway station and its 1,600-space Park & Rail. Bausch announced this week that the inauguration is scheduled for April 2023. He expects the project to relieve congestion in the south and centre of the country.
He also announced the planned conclusion of a similar, but smaller, project in Mersch by the end of the year. The town’s railway station will be modernised and is to house a Park&Ride with around 400 parking spots. Bausch called this a ‘vital step’, pointing out that the railway station in Mersch is very well connected to the capital and to Kirchberg thanks to the Pfaffenthal funicular.
The construction of the Park & Ride at the Cloche d’Or will also be completed by the end of 2023. Around 2,000 parking spaces are planned in this six-storey structure next to the Luxembourg Stadium. The P+R is intended to enable users to park their cars and continue their journey by foot, bicycle, bus or tram.
The minister also stressed the importance of the Clervaux crossing, the first section of which was inaugurated in June 2022. He confirmed that further works granting easier access to the nearby industrial zone will be completed by the end of the year.
Finally, Bausch also assured our colleagues at 5minutes that ‘a large part of the work’ that is currently obstructing the N3 in Howald, and especially the Rue des Scillas, will be completed by the end of 2023. He admits that this section ‘has been a big problem’, especially due to its importance to the tram route. If all goes well, motorists should rediscover a ‘new N3' by the end of the year which will also see the tram route extended to Cloche d’Or.
