As it is no longer considered secure enough, LuxTrust will finally shut down its token service at the end of 2024 after 16 years in use.
According to spokesperson Anne Reuland, it is crucially important for the company to go with the times and recognise when hardware no longer meets modern standards: “We cannot hold on to devices from 2008. We are convinced that, unfortunately, the time has come to faze out the token.”
The service will thus go offline on 31 December this year.
That does however not mean that there is no longer a physical alternative to the LuxTrust mobile application. The LuxTrust Scan, which has the same security properties as the app, will remain operational, though officials generally advise people to use the app given that face ID and pin codes represent yet another level of security.
Furthermore, Reuland explains that the app is able to show additional transaction information: “You are being informed of the specific amount that you are trying to wire to a person, an important piece of information that allows you to check what you are doing. This helps identify and avert phishing attempts.”
At present, three quarters of the close to 670,000 LuxTrust users already rely on the app. According to Reuland, those who still have to make the change should not fear, as the company has set up a help desk to assist people.
An issue that persists is the question of how to properly dispose of the token. Given the presence of an internal and non-removable battery, the regular bin is not the correct place.
