In interviews with RTL and Radio 100,7, Bettel described the international community as a “large dog” with a lot of bark, but no bite.
“We [the international community] have no means to intervene,” Bettel told interviewers. “We could send international troops but when we see how many UNRWA staff members have already died, we don’t want to.”
French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to stop supplying Israel with weapons for use in the Gaza Strip “is not a solution either,” Bettel continued. “If Israel is defeated because its enemies are supplied with weapons, that won’t help anybody.”
“A ceasefire is the only thing that could help, followed by a two-state solution,” concluded the minister.
In response, the Jonk Sozialiste (Young Socialists) said Bettel’s statements were “nonsensical” and “empty demands for peace” which showed how little political will there is to stop the conflict.
The JSL called for a halt to the supply of weapons to Israel and demanded that Luxembourg recognise the state of Palestine, among other things.
