Several sites to open on WednesdayLuxembourg's bathing season launches amid chilly waters
As the bathing season kicks off on Wednesday, Luxembourg is preparing to welcome visitors to its various lakes and ponds. Wednesday will see the opening of the two Weiswampach lakes, Upper Sûre Lake, Remerschen Ponds, and Echternach Lake.
While water quality remains good, if not excellent, the water temperature may prove bracing for some. Despite the official start of the 2024 bathing season, which will run until 30 September, temperatures in May have certainly been higher in the past. Even with forecasts predicting temperatures of up to 22°C on Wednesday, the water in the country’s lakes and ponds is unlikely to have significantly warmed.
Starting Wednesday, the following lakes and ponds will be open for brave souls to take the plunge, as confirmed by the Water Management Authority:
- The two Weiswampach lakes (upper and lower) in the municipality of Weiswampach.
- The Upper Sûre Lake spanning the neighbouring municipalities of Boulaide, Esch-sur-Sûre, and Lac de la Haute-Sûre.
- Remerschen Ponds, a designated swimming area in the municipality of Schengen.
- Echternach Lake, specifically the ‘Adventure Island’ swimming area, in the municipality of Echternach (scheduled to open at the end of May following pontoon maintenance).
Water quality at these sites ranges from ‘excellent’ (Weiswampach Lakes, Upper Sûre Lake, zones 1-3 of the Remerschen Ponds) to ‘good’ (zone 4 of the Remerschen Ponds and Echternach Lake).
