Our colleagues at RTL Radio asked around to find out more about how the general public feels about holidays abroad. The situation this summer is an unprecedented one as increasing numbers of countries have imposed entry restrictions for Luxembourg residents. In normal times, the majority of holidaymakers would have already booked a trip for the summer months but many travelers, it seems, still remain cautious about planning a holiday abroad due to the current situation.
Tests, quarantine, or banned: where can you travel? When asked by RTL, some people said they feel undecided about booking a trip and worried that further travel restrictions may be imposed. Many are therefore thinking about cancelling their trip or spending the holidays in Luxembourg.
Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece remain popular destinations for tourists from Luxembourg. According to Chris Poos from “We love to travel,” a large number of would-be tourists are nevertheless having second thoughts about embarking on their trip.
He explained: “We have people who have booked, saying that they don’t want to stay here, that they need to get away, that they need a break. But then we also have quite a few people who are saying ‘ok, not this year.’ And they are already postponing their travel plans to next year.”
Local travel agencies are mainly focusing on destinations that are currently recording low new infection numbers, and that take precautionary measures seriously. This can, however, be a challenging enterprise as the situation in a given country can rapidly change. Travel restrictions imposed by other countries are making their job even more challenging. Voyages Flammang director Berny Ley stressed that his travel agencies are doing everything in their power to keep customers updated. “Our job is to inform people about potential changes,” he said. He also underlined that the travel agencies are making sure beforehand that listed hotels have implemented precautionary measures.
Outside of Europe, Tunisia for instance remains a popular destination due to its comparatively low infection numbers.
