The driver of a Skoda bearing Luxembourg plates broke an unflattering record on Friday, becoming the fastest excessive speeder caught by German police in Wittlich during speed checks. The police radar spotted the Luxembourger travelling at 211 km/h - more than double the 100 km/h speed limit - on a section of the A1 motorway towards the Grand Duchy, just before the Sauertal bridge.
According to German police, the driver now risks a three-month driving ban, a €700 fine and two points removed from his driving licence. Given his extremely high speed, the Wittlich police department is investigating whether criminal proceedings can be brought against the errant driver, who is also suspected of engaging in illegal street racing.
On the other side of the border, this has been a recognisable offence since 2017, singling out instances when a driver travels “at an inappropriate speed and in a reckless manner in order to reach the highest possible speed”.
On the day of the incident, Wittlich police recorded 330 offences in just five hours - or one violation every 54 seconds!
