The Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) and Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB) have launched a series of hospital demonstrations to rally healthcare workers ahead of their planned 28 June national protest.
This mobilisation comes in response to what unions describe as the sector’s omission from Prime Minister Luc Frieden’s recent State of the Nation address.
OGBL representative David Angel noted the conspicuous absence of nursing sector investments in the government’s priorities, despite Europe-wide caregiver shortages. The unions’ concerns extend beyond healthcare, targeting what they see as broader threats to worker protections - particularly potential changes to collective bargaining agreements regarding working hour regulations.
The unions have articulated a comprehensive list of grievances with the current government, including pension reform proposals, changes to Sunday work regulations, the termination of the energy price cap, and potential reductions in National Health Fund (CNS) services.
“We’re seeing fundamental rights being eroded while the housing crisis threatens thousands of households,” representatives of the newly united union front stated.
