During a regular update visit to Luxembourg, the Cape Verdean Foreign Minister on Friday applauded the “exemplary cooperation” with Luxembourg. Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel also spoke highly of the relationship between both countries, describing it as a true friendship: “I reaffirm the full support of Luxembourg’s cooperation with Cabo Verde. I am also pleased about our common attachment to an international order based on multilateralism, international law, peace, and the rule of law.”

Bettel acknowledged that a lot has changed in the 30 years of cooperation, noting that Cape Verde has developed significantly as a country. He further drew attention to the large Cape Verdean community in Luxembourg, with many having become Luxembourgish citizens: “A second generation has grown up here, gone to school here, and now works everywhere in every professional sector that you can find here in the country. They are integrated people.”

According to Minister Rui Alberto Figueiredo Soares, Cape Verde has made good progress on many levels thanks to this cooperation: “A lot has happened in terms of health development, statistics, professional training, equality for young people and women, water, and energy.”

However, according to the Cape Verdean minister, cooperation is to be further expanded: “We should continue our work with a ‘win-win’ partnership in trade, as well as in digitalisation and cyber security, which are very important to us.”

Up until now, the Luxembourgish ambassador in Lisbon was responsible for the Cape Verde, but from this summer on, Luxembourg will appoint an independent ambassador for the island nation.
