In light of upcoming electionsLuxembourg student association unveils demands to future administration

In light of this year's Chamber elections, the Association of Luxembourg Student Organisations (ACEL) has published a list of objectives that it wants to see implemented by 2028.

The elections will decide over who is in charge of the Grand Duchy for next five years and the ACEL hopes that the party or parties in question will not forget about the daily struggles of students, says ACEL president Ann Bertemes.

One of the areas in need of improvement is public transport in an around Luxembourg, argues ACEL secretary Gianni Di Paoli: “Be it because of inflexible times, numerous cancellations, delays, time-consuming commutes, or even significant price differences depending on where one wants to go.That is why public transport to university cities needs to be made more attractive. And we demand from the future administration to continue working rigorously on this issue and also to continue expanding cooperation with our neighbouring countries.”

Bertemes further discussed the future of the student convention, which has undergone some changes in recent years: “An increasingly smaller number of universities are physically represented at the student convention and only use the online platform, which has been in place since Covid. We as the ACEL would welcome if the physical offer at the convention would once again be increased and also diversified. Even universities that are further away should return to the student convention so that all pupils can learn about the place where they want to go most.”

The Association further wants to simplify access to universities. For instance, it should be easier for pupils who want to study in the Netherlands or in Great Britain to get their language certificate. At present, the procedure is said to still be costly and difficult to access. The ACEL also proposes that students should be allowed to register educational expenses, such as laptops, on their tax declaration up to five years after purchase.
