Only 7.04% of Luxembourg's energy came from renewable sources in 2019, down from 8.97% in 2018. The Grand Duchy has a target of 11% for 2020.

Luxembourg thus lies bottom of the European rankings, behind Malta (8.5%), the Netherlands (8.8%) and Belgium (9.9). The EU average is 20%.

On the other end of the scale, Sweden is the only EU country using more renewable than non-renewable energy, at 56%, although Iceland and Norway are both over 70%. The Swedes, alongside Finland, Lithuania, Denmark and Estonia, have already surpassed their 2020 goals.

The figures will surely be disappointing for the Bettel government, and especially the Green Party deputies in the coalition. They also clearly show that Luxembourg has a long way to go in responding to the climate crisis.
