Since 1838Luxembourg records second-warmest autumn in nearly two centuries

RTL Today
This year saw Luxembourg's second-hottest autumn since records began in 1838, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

This autumn was Luxembourg’s second-warmest, sitting behind autumn 2006. On average, temperatures recorded between 1 September and 30 November reached 11.7°C, or 1.8°C - 2.6°C higher than the period between 1991 and 2020.

In addition, there was a lot more rainfall than usual, with between 65.2 and 140 millimetres more rain than other autumn periods. These extraordinary weather conditions in part had a positive effect on Luxembourg’s agriculture, according to a report published on Friday. Fields flourished, with strong growth recorded both for quality and quantity, and although this year’s corn yield was average in terms of quantity, it was said to be of exceptional quality.

Unfortunately, vegetable crops delivered mixed results. Courgettes and tomatoes were harvested for longer than usual, but other crops suffered as a result of the warm weather and excessive rainfall. Grapes in Luxembourg’s vineyards had to be picked earlier in the season due to the heat, delivering a smaller harvest than usual. Apples and pears were picked prior to October’s heavy rain.
