Luxembourg has passed the peak of the flu epidemic, according to the latest figures from the National Health Directorate, which show a significant decline in influenza cases over the past few weeks.

The latest figures released by the National Health Directorate indicate that Luxembourg has passed the peak of the flu epidemic.

Between 17 and 23 February 2025, the number of influenza cases reported by laboratories dropped from 1,630 to 1,166, representing a 28% decrease compared to the previous week. While infections remain common among children, the National Health Directorate stated that the decline in case numbers over the past three weeks confirms that the peak of the epidemic is now behind the country.

During the most recent reporting period, 38% of cases were identified as influenza A, while 62% were classified as influenza B. Among the influenza A virus samples analysed, the subtypes detected were A(H1)pdm9 (44.1%) and A(H3) (55.9%).

In addition, the number of confirmed cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) decreased by 27%, falling from 174 the previous week to 127. RSV infections primarily affect the youngest and oldest age groups, including young children and individuals over 80 years old.

The data also show a continued decline in SARS-CoV-2 cases, with positive results dropping from 55 to 42–a 24% reduction compared to the prior week.

How to protect against seasonal flu

In addition to vaccination, the National Health Directorate recommends the following measures to limit the spread of respiratory viruses:

  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water for 30 seconds, ensuring thorough cleaning of palms, fingers, backs of hands, and under fingernails.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing or use the crook of your elbow if a tissue is unavailable.
  • Dispose of used tissues immediately and wash hands afterward.
  • Avoid physical contact such as hugs, kisses, and handshakes.
  • Stay away from crowded places during the epidemic season.
  • Remain at home if feeling unwell to prevent spreading illness to others.
  • Ventilate indoor spaces regularly, at least three to four times a day for ten minutes.
