Every spring and autumn, maintenance and cleaning campaigns of Luxembourg’s motorway tunnels are organised by the National Roads Administration. This Tuesday, 18 March, marks the start of this year’s campaign.
The main purpose of the campaign is to make sure that the security systems are working well, according to the press release by the National Roads Administration. This includes preventive and corrective maintenance of the safety equipment, checking the operation and interaction of the various pieces of equipment, and cleaning the tunnel walls.
The equipment that will be checked as part of this campaign includes, but is not limited to: the ventilation system, fire detectors, fire extinguishers, lighting and guidance systems, and roadside emergency telephone boxes. The surveillance cameras, electrical systems, water retention basins, pump devices, and the transformers will also be maintained.
In order to reduce the impact on traffic, while taking into account coordination with other worksites, maintenance and tunnel cleaning operations will be carried out mainly at night. Maintenance works are carried out from March to mid-May, followed by cleaning. Works will conclude with the tunnels in Howald and Cents, respectively, on 29-30 May.
The second maintenance and cleaning campaign will take place from early September to early November.
The scheduled dates for works on the various tunnels can be consulted on the CITA website at www.cita.lu.
