Luxembourg maintains its position as Europe’s most generous provider of family welfare support, according to a new Eurostat study.
In 2022, the country allocated €3,789 per capita annually – more than double the amount offered by second-ranked Denmark (€1,878) and significantly exceeding neighbouring Germany (€1,616). While Belgium (€976.22) and France (€866.79) ranked 8th and 9th respectively, Bulgaria (€211), Greece (€264), and Cyprus (€277) represented the EU’s lowest spenders. Non-EU member Norway also performed strongly at €2,277.28.
The Grand Duchy’s comprehensive support system includes family allowances (€271.66 per child in 2022, and more depending on the child’s age) amounting to over €3,200 annually, annual back-to-school payments ranging from €115 to €235 per child, and a birth allowance distributed in three instalments totalling €1,740.
Eurostat notes Luxembourg’s figures are partially elevated by benefits paid to cross-border workers, as calculations are based on per-person expenditure rather than per-family allocations.
