On Wednesday, a one-year-old child and three family members were evacuated from Gaza to Tirana, Albania, by the Luxembourg Air Ambulance. The operation was coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS).
The evacuation was necessary due to the destruction of medical infrastructure in Gaza, which made it impossible to provide adequate treatment for the child, who is suffering from a serious illness. This effort is part of a broader initiative by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to evacuate children and other civilians from Gaza to third countries for life-saving medical care.
The operation is co-funded by the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Union through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. It uses flight times reserved for medical evacuations (MEDEVAC) under the emergency.lu system.
