Greenpeace Luxembourg and natur&ëmwelt issued a joint statement Wednesday expressing concern over Environment Minister Serge Wilmes’ recent comments advocating for relaxed enforcement of the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

The remarks came during a Tuesday interview with Radio 100,7, where Wilmes endorsed “derogations and relaxation” of the anti-deforestation rules. His stance aligns with Agriculture Minister Martine Hansen, who has proposed simplifying the EUDR implementation.

The organisations strongly opposed this position, stating it “contradicts EU objectives to combat global deforestation and biodiversity loss.” They emphasised that current crises – including tropical deforestation, climate change, and species decline – demand strengthened rather than weakened environmental protections.
