During a recent working visit to Kyiv, Luxembourg’s Minister of Defence, Yuriko Backes, accompanied by General Steve Thull, Chief of Staff of the Luxembourg Army, paid tribute to Ukrainian soldiers who lost their lives in the ongoing war. The visit, which took place on 19 March, was conducted at the invitation of Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.
During her meeting with Umerov, Backes was briefed on the latest developments on the frontlines and Ukraine’s current priorities for military support. The discussions also covered the digital transformation of the Ukrainian army, particularly the impact of the IT Coalition, a joint initiative led by Luxembourg and Estonia.
“The security and defence of the European Union begins in Ukraine”, Backes stated – reaffirming Luxembourg’s steadfast support for the country. She added that avenues are being explored to enhance Luxembourg’s contributions to Ukraine’s defence efforts.
Following the meeting, Backes and General Thull visited Maidan of Independence Square to honour fallen soldiers. They also paid their respects at the “Memorial of the Fallen Soldiers,” where a wreath was laid in tribute.
