Luxembourg climbed to eleventh in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders, ranking first globally in security for journalists, despite lower scores in its legislative framework.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) released its annual World Press Freedom Index on World Press Freedom Day. Norway retains its top position from 2023, while Estonia dropped from second to eighth. Germany also saw a notable improvement, rising eleven places to secure a spot within the top ten, followed closely by Luxembourg in eleventh.

Delving into the details of the report reveals that Luxembourg even ranks first globally in the security indicator. However, the country’s legislative framework scores lower, placing it at 34th in this specific category.

The report by Reporters Without Borders paints a concerning global picture, with a “significant deterioration” in press freedom overall. The number of countries categorised as having the worst press freedom situations reached an unprecedented high of 36 this year. Eritrea is at the bottom of the ranking, preceded by Syria, Afghanistan, North Korea, and Iran.
