The local branch of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) announced on social media on Friday that Gust Stefanetti, the long-serving mayor of Mertert-Wasserbillig, has passed away.

Stefanetti was a key figure in local politics for several decades. He first joined the municipal council in 1982, later serving as alderman from 1985 to 2000. In 2000, he was appointed mayor of Mertert-Wasserbillig, a role he held until stepping down in 2016 due to health reasons.

That same year, Stefanetti was named honorary mayor of the municipality. The LSAP also noted that he had been a committed member of the party since 1982 and described his passing as a significant loss.
