Municipal electionsLSAP advocates for more local doctors' surgeries and municipal infirmaries

RTL Today
Following a disappointing performance in 2017, the LSAP feels that it is well-prepared for the 2023 municipal elections. Co-President Francine Closener discussed some of the party's key policies with our colleagues from RTL Télé.

The Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) experienced significant setbacks in the 2017 municipal elections, losing out on numerous mayoral positions. As the next elections draw near, the party’s local sections made sure to compile their candidate lists as soon as possible and include more women and young people.

Key policy focus for local elections

The LSAP aims to improve healthcare accessibility for residents by emphasising the need for more local doctors’ surgeries and the introduction of municipal infirmaries.

Closener explained that the party also wants to deploy task forces in schools to alleviate the workload of teachers. These task forces, consisting of psychologists, educators, nurses, and teachers, would provide crucial support and remain readily available. The LSAP co-president highlighted the importance of seamless operations, stating that “these are policies that the municipalities can and, in our view, should implement.”

Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette in the spotlight

The LSAP faced a significant setback in Esch-sur-Alzette during the 2017 elections. The young team around list leader Steve Faltz represents a new dynamic within LSAP. In addition, Closener acknowledged that Luxembourg City is also an important challenge for her party.

“We take the issue of security very seriously,” Closener said. While the creation of a municipal police force proposed by the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) “sounds good on paper,” she contended that such a force would essentially perform tasks similar to those currently handled by the police. For the LSAP co-president, the difference between the two would be minimal.
