End of an era in telecomLast so-called "EWSD" exchange decommissioned in Luxembourg

While home phone users will notice no change, Luxembourg has quietly marked the end of an era in telecommunications with the shutdown of its final analogue switching system.

The last so-called EWSD switching exchange was officially decommissioned on Friday at the telecom centre in Luxembourg-Gare, marking a symbolic moment that completes the country’s transition to a fully digital, all-IP network.

Since 17 January, all customers have been operating on the new digital system. For users, this major technological upgrade will be barely noticeable: landline calls will continue as normal, with only the underlying technology having changed. The transition involves gradually phasing out and recycling the old copper lines, with fibre-optic infrastructure being rolled out in their place. This modernisation is not just about faster connections; it is also expected to significantly reduce both electricity consumption and the sector's carbon footprint.
