Every year, around 600 children and adolescents take part in the holiday camps organised by the Luxembourg Youth Red Cross. These one- to two-week camps offer young participants unforgettable experiences both in Luxembourg and across Europe, with destinations including Italy, Portugal, Greece, Austria, the Netherlands, and the Belgian seaside.
One such camp for children aged four to seven was under way in Hosingen last weekend – and RTL visited the site to see the fun in full swing.
In this themed ‘Europe tour’ camp, children enjoy a packed programme of creative and playful activities. From card games like Uno and drawing to storytelling and dancing, the days are filled with energy and imagination.
Camp animator Jil Donven explained that preparing the setting takes time, with planning beginning as early as March, so that the decor and costumes could feel as authentic as possible. Kids animators wear themed hats, shoes, and even carry instruments to bring their roles to life and immerse the children in each day’s adventure.
Since all that playing works up an appetite, lunch is served daily at 12:30pm, giving everyone a chance to recharge before jumping back into the afternoon’s activities.
During the summer months, around 70 to 80 kids animators are mobilised to support these camps. According to Jil Scolati, executive director of the Luxembourg Youth Red Cross, children aged four to 17 are welcome to participate.
Kids animators must obtain a group leader certificate, known as the ‘brevet d’animateur’, through the Red Cross or another approved organisation. The certificate is accredited by the National Youth Service (SNJ), though experience and motivation also play a key role.
