The rector of the University of Luxembourg, Jens Kreisel, will not seek a second term when his current mandate expires at the end of 2027, the university announced on Friday.

Kreisel informed the university's Board of Governors that he intends to step down when his term ends on 31 December 2027, saying he wants to focus once again on research and "the major scientific challenges of the future" as a scholar.

The announcement follows the university's governance rules, which require the rector to notify the Board of Governors of their intentions at least 18 months before the end of their mandate.

The Board said it regretted Kreisel's decision but respected his choice, praising his commitment to the university and saying it looked forward to continuing to work with him until the end of his term.

The University of Luxembourg has been dogged by controversies in recent months, with allegations of systemic governance issues and legal challenges. In January, Kreisel faced the press in order to respond to criticism, acknowledging individual conflicts and promising action.
