In conversation with RTL on Wednesday morning, Luxembourg’s Foreign Affairs Minister Jean Asselborn reiterated his position that peace in the Middle East can only be achieved with a two-state solution. On Tuesday, the politician from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) had already made the same point in front of the United Nations Security Council in New York.
Asselborn explained that Israel has the right to defend itself, but needs to observe international rules when doing so. He unequivocally condemned the Hamas attacks of 7 October, which resulted in hundreds of deaths, injuries, and abductions. It is of upmost importance to now find a compromise and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza to support the civil population, Asselborn further underlined. However, this can only be achieved if Isreal temporarily stops its air strikes, he noted.
Asselborn elaborated that about two million people are currently trapped in the Gaza Strip, which is why a ceasefire is desperately needed. Similarly, Hamas has to release the over 200 hostages still held at this time, according to the Foreign Affairs Minister.
When asked about the potential risk of the conflict expanding to the wider region, Asselborn expressed his view that this remains unlikely at the moment. He assessed that the US are still working to block an Israeli ground offensive and that Iran has no interest in a war.
