The two heads of government were in the Grand Duchy to inaugurate a new street in Kirchberg, Rue Václav Havel, the second street named after a Czech civil rights activist.
It is a symbolic inauguration set to further strengthen the relationship between Luxembourg and the Czech Republic, ties which have been ongoing since the 14th Century.
Václav Havel served as the last president of Czechoslovakia between 1989-1992 and President of the Czech Republic between 1993-2003. He was also an author and playwright. Havel was imprisoned for five years for rebelling against the communist regime.
Rue Václav Havel is also home to a monument of the Czech civil rights activist, enshrined with one of his most famous quotes: “‘Truth and love will overcome lies and hatred.”
Czech Prime Minister Fiala interpreted the quote in the current context of the Ukraine war: “It is not said that the humanist values prevail quickly or that it is easy. But it remains a truth, because injustices and oppression are by nature unstable. The spirit of democracy and freedom will always prevail.
