Starting in 2026, Bascharage in southern Luxembourg will host a site dedicated to exploring the potential production of green hydrogen in the Grand Duchy. The project will utilise 100% renewable electricity, with sustainability as a central focus.

The initiative also aims to study and analyse hydrogen production, with the goal of ensuring that LuxHyVal is not a one-off project but serves as an inspiration for similar projects in other countries. One proposed idea is to export the project to Ukraine to kickstart innovative efforts after the war.

Local industries will be the main beneficiaries of green hydrogen. For instance, Sales-Lentz and the Intercommunal Passenger Transport in Esch-sur-Alzette (TICE) could replace parts of their fleet with hydrogen-powered buses.

17 partners from seven different countries are involved in LuxHyVal, with the University of Luxembourg acting as the project coordinator. The project has a total budget of €39 million.
