Hunters are calling for the Nature and Forest Agency to extend the hunting hours for wild boar, arguing the growing population numbers are making it difficult for them to keep up.
Currently, wild boar can be hunted between October and mid-February between one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset. However, hunters want these times to be extended, as the animals are more active at night.
The national hunting plan outlines the number of animals that can be shot in order to maintain population numbers and specifies where and when hunting is permitted.
Each year’s numbers are calculated based on previous years’ shootings and local wildlife damage.
Official figures from the Nature Administration show that the number of wild boar shot between 2018 and 2022 was 130% compared to what was envisioned, with a total of 22,647 wild boar being shot instead of the anticipated 17,431.
The hunting syndicate is therefore calling for a revision of the hunting plan to match the growing population numbers.
