On Friday night, Luxembourg police carried out extensive alcohol checks across multiple locations, including Frisange, Dudelange, Medernach, and Ettelbruck. A total of 789 drivers were tested to ensure they were not under the influence of alcohol before taking to the road.

The operation resulted in 33 motorists being caught drink-driving, with nine losing their driving licences on the spot.

Additional drink-driving incidents

In addition to the organised checks, police patrols intercepted several other drink drivers throughout the evening.

Around 6om, officers were alerted to a visibly intoxicated driver at a service station in Rumelange.
Another driver, also intoxicated, ran out of fuel on the A4 motorway near Leudelange.

In Dudelange, a driver lost control of their vehicle, striking a sign, a tree, and then a pedestrian in the town centre. Fortunately, the pedestrian sustained only minor injuries. The driver’s license was immediately revoked.

Some drivers attempted to evade responsibility. In Bascharage, one driver sped off as police approached but was later caught and found to be intoxicated. Similarly, in the Clausen neighbourhood of Luxembourg City, a driver tried to flee after a car park collision but was intercepted by police and issued a driving ban.

Police patrols also reported an incident in Dudelange, where a motorist was stopped for driving with a punctured tyre, and in Esch-sur-Alzette, where a driver was pulled over for driving without headlights. During the latter incident, the driver damaged the rear-view mirror of a police vehicle while attempting to pass.

The night’s operations concluded early Saturday morning when a final motorist was stopped on the A4 after being observed zigzagging across the road.
