The Victor Hugo Hall in Limpertsberg hosted the 27th annual Christmas party organised by the homeless support charity Stëmm vun der Strooss (“The Voice of the Street”) on Thursday, drawing a large crowd that included the Grand Ducal couple. The event welcomed 650 invited guests.
A queue had formed outside the venue well before the doors opened at noon.
André Duebbers, president of the non-profit’s administrative board, linked the turnout to growing economic pressures. “Poverty in the country is on the rise. Insecurity now affects all social classes”, he stated in an interview with RTL. “The young, the elderly, the working poor. A party like this is extremely important for these people”, he stressed.
Previously held at the Bonnevoie Cultural Centre, the event relocated this year due to outgrowing its former space. The municipality of Luxembourg City provided the new hall free of charge.
The day offered invited guests a festive respite, featuring a full lunch, music, games for all ages, and gift distributions.
The meal was prepared on a large scale: pumpkin soup was served as a starter, followed by a main course of chicken with potatoes and vegetables, and a slice of bûche de Noël (Yule log) for dessert. Pascal Luck, one of the head chefs, detailed the quantities: “We prepared about 230 kilos of meat, 200 kilos of potatoes and 150 kilos of vegetables. Not to mention 300 litres of soup.”
The Christmas party continued throughout the day before concluding at approximately 6pm.
