With high temperatures affecting Luxembourg, the Intercommunal Hospital in Steinfort (HIS) has long had a concrete plan in place to support elderly residents.
The heatwave plan at HIS is triggered when temperatures reach 25°C and is continually revised as needed. Above all, the hydration round, known as "tour d'hydratation", ensures that residents receive enough water and that it is actually consumed, as hydration is a key concern during hot weather and is easily forgotten, particularly in old age.
Generally, the heatwave plan takes effect each year on 1 June, but this year it had to be activated in May, according to hospital CEO Luc Gindt.
"That means the fans coming back into the rooms", Gindt explained, "We also have water fountains set up all over the building where staff can serve themselves, but which our elderly residents can also benefit from."
The HIS comprises three different structures: a rehabilitation unit, a day care centre, and a residential facility. RTL visited the latter and got a brief glimpse into its workshops.
These are held every month and are adapted during periods of higher temperatures. Audrey Creola, an educator at HIS, stated that staff always check the weather forecast in advance.
"For example, if it's going to be hot this afternoon, then we do an activity in the 'Stammdësch', which is air-conditioned", Creola said.
The "Stammdësch" is the restaurant at HIS, where dishes are also adapted to the weather. During hotter days, cold and lighter meals are offered more frequently, although residents can always choose a hot meal if they prefer.
