A statement published by the public prosecutor’s office on Thursday confirmed that authorities had investigated a suspicious industrial object which landed at Findel airport on a cargo flight from Brazil. Its ultimate destination was the Netherlands, using Luxembourg as a transit country in a wider logistics chain.

“The shipment, officially declared as an industrial object with a total weight of approximately 3.3 tons, had certain particularities that warranted in-depth checks,” wrote the prosecutor’s office.

Upon discovering 500kg of cocaine hidden in the shipment, the Grand Ducal authorities collaborated with their Dutch counterparts to investigate the people behind the narcotics transportation. Under close scrutiny, the object containing the drugs was delivered to the Netherlands, where Dutch police intervened as soon as a number of individuals attempted to gain access to the object and its concealed contents. Several people were arrested as a result of the operation on 29 January.

The investigation has been passed on to Dutch authorities, the Luxembourg prosecutor’s office wrote.
