Speaker of Déi LénkGovernment's handling of trade unions "not smart": Carole Thoma

RTL Today
The speaker of the leftist party "Déi Lénk" (The Left) was a guest on RTL Radio on Wednesday morning.

According to Thoma, MPs received less and less information and transparency was decreasing daily. The speaker of Déi Lénk cited the epidemic law as an example but also the extension of the emergency measure which allows for work days of up to 12 or 48 hours respectively in the sectors considered "essential".

Thoma argued that maybe at the beginning of an epidemic people in the health care sector would be required to work longer. However, it was incomprehensible why people working at an optician or in a petrol station should be allowed to work such hours even now. She stated that the extension of the measure was just as incomprehensible, now that the lockdown measures are being lifted.

Thoma went on to say that she could understand why trade unions are becoming impatient. According to her, the government was also not acting in a smart way by ignoring the syndicates.

Déi Lénk welcomed the aids accorded by the government. However, businesses should be required to pay back at least part of it once they have recovered after the crisis. It should also not be possible to use the aids to restructure a business and lay down workers. Thoma also has doubts when it comes to state guarantees, pointing out that it should be differentiated based on the size of the business.

The speaker of Déi Lénk also stated that there was now a good basis for workers – especially in the health care sector – to negotiate better collective agreements. When asked if she expected a change in consumer behaviour after the crisis, Thoma stated that instead of only holding the individual accountable, there is a need for systematic change.
