Last year, Luxembourg produced more than eight million tonnes of CO2. This was a slight increase compared to the previous year, which saw lower levels due to the beginning of the pandemic. However, the Grand Duchy still managed to stay below the emission threshold set by the European Union.

Construction and industry were responsible for more emissions than initially planned. The transportation sector, which produces about 60% of Luxembourg’s CO2 emissions, registered a 20% decrease compared to pre-pandemic levels. Agriculture also managed to curb down emissions.

The overall goal remains to cut CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and to attain climate neutrality by 2050.

The government has also come up with a new strategy to meet the European goal of saving an additional 15% of gas between 1 August 2022 and 31 March 2023.

Government officials will thus seek ways to reduce energy consumption in public buildings, which will also be done on a municipal level. An information campaign concerned with ways for citizens to optimise their energy behaviour will be launched in September.

Until then, people can already consult this website to find out more about the different ways of saving energy.
