Article 160-34 of Luxembourg’s Highway Code clearly states that vehicles must have suitable tyres for wintry conditions, such as ice, packed snow, slush, patches of ice or frost.
Motorists who drive in such conditions with unsuitable tyres, such as summer tyres, may be fined €74 if caught by police. Six such drivers fell afoul of police patrols during Monday’s snowfall. Vehicles may also be immobilised in such situations.
As a reminder: all four tyres must be changed to winter or all-season tyres, preferably between October or Easter (as recommended by the Grand Ducal police). The law applies to all vehicles on Luxembourgish territory, even those with foreign registrations.
Drivers waiting to change over to winter tyres in Luxembourg will have to exercise patience at the moment, however, as garages have observed an influx in requests over recent weeks, despite approaching the end of the change-over season. RTL reached out to several specialist garages to provide average wait times for appointments, with some branches able to fulfil requests within a week at the earliest, while others can take up to three weeks to fit in appointments, depending on the region.
Given the current extensive delays, having the tyres ready for installation or needing to order new ones doesn’t seem to impact the scheduling timeline, with many garages unable to offer earlier fitting appointments.
