A Portuguese national who was convicted of attempted homicide by a Luxembourg court in 2016 was arrested in Lisbon in January, according to reports.

The Luxembourg public prosecutor’s office announced that the 42-year-old had been detained in Lisbon following “exemplary cooperation” between Luxembourg and Portugal’s Fugitive Active Search Teams (known as FAST).

The individual was located in a “dangerous” neighbourhood near the Portuguese capital on 29 January.

In 2016, the man was convicted in absentia by Luxembourg’s district court to a ten-year prison sentence for attempted homicide. He was notified of the decision in July 2023, when it became final.

The crime was committed on 9 November 2013, after a mass brawl broke out at a nightclub in Foetz, in which a person suffered head wounds after being beaten by a metal pole. The perpetrator was placed in pre-trial detention for a period of several months in 2013 and 2014. He later fled the country and returned to Portugal.

A Europe-wide warrant was issued for the man’s arrest on 21 December 2023. It is thought that the offender will serve the remainder of his sentence in Portugal.
