Prior to the start of the new parliamentary year, the country's biggest opposition party will welcome a new MP in their ranks, as MP Françoise Hetto-Gaasch has announced that she will step down.

Hetto-Gaasch, who is one of three CSV MPs to represent eastern Luxembourg, is also a member of the municipal executive in Junglinster.

According to information obtained by RTL, the former RTL employee will be replaced by Max Hengel, the candidate who won the most votes after her in the east of the country.

Hetto-Gaasch was first elected as an MP in 2004. Between 2009 and the 2013 early elections, she held the positions of Minister for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Minister for Tourism, and Minister of Equality between Women and Men for the Christian Social People's Party (CSV). Born in Dudelange, she was also mayor of Junglinster for two years.

Max Hengel, 44, brings his experience as a political scientist and historian to the party ranks in the Chamber of Deputies. He worked for the CSV parliamentary group and was also mayor of Wormeldange until 2020. In accordance with the coalition agreement, he was succeeded by Mathis Ast in 2020.
